Professional Development For Teachers

Options Training Solutions has launched a new site: Professional Development for Teachers. The site includes seven one hour sessions for with new course to be added annually. Each session is either a presentation by or a discussion with a highly experienced industry professional.

The sessions can contribute to a teacher's Queensland Collage of Teacher's continuous professional development requirements. Participants are issued with a certificate at the end of each one hour session as proof of completion.

The current sessions available are:

A minimum of six new sessions will be added to the portal per annum to meet your ongoing professional development needs. We invite you to make suggestions or discuss session themes for future production with us.

Not Just a Teacher – Also a Helper

This one hour session focuses on the changing role of teachers in today’s schools. The days have long gone when teachers were only required to teach their subject matter. Today teachers find themselves not only teaching subject matter but are often a young person’s first port of call in times of anxiety, stress and/ or uncertainty. During this discussion Shauna and Emily discuss the ‘helper’ role that teachers often find themselves in, the challenges they face, some of the signs to look for in young people needing help or support and the importance of confidentiality.

Fierce Conversations

This session focuses on having the conversations that are critical to your success. Most people think conversations are easy. Mike will engage in a conversation about conversations and you will learn how to be better at them in a way that will lead to success. He will explore the three main ideas, four objectives and seven principles of Fierce Conversations. It will be no surprise to most that the single most cited reason for problems occurring at home, at school and in the workplace is a breakdown in communication. When we are better at having conversations we will experience more success and positive results.

The Teacher's Role In Career Development Of Students

Career Development is not just about getting a job. Career development is the investigation, planning, decision making process and management of your work and personal life options and is an ongoing process throughout life. During this one hour session. Dr Lim discusses the changing world of work, the implications for career development, stages and language of career development, the skills required for successful career development, strategies for supporting students with their career development and useful career development resources for everyone.

ASD Students – Strategies For The Classroom

Both experienced and new teachers In her private practice Anette Renneflott works closely with young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). During this one hour presentation Ms Renneflott discusses ASD children and their successfulengagement in today’s classrooms. She will explain what ASD is, limitations of diagnoses, the challenging behaviours associated with the disorder, social, communication, organisation and sensory challenges faced by ASD children along with strategies that can best support these children in the classroom.

As in all work places the art of communication in a school can be very challenging often result in communication breakdowns, ill-will and poor productivity. As schools are dynamic places the importance of positive and productive communication is even more paramount. Communication is more than policies and procedures, meetings and newsletters. In this one hour session Shauna Quinlivan discusses the ‘bare bones’ of the communication process. She outlines the communication cycle and how it works, the personal and physical barriers to communication, communication in the school setting (teacher/student, teacher/colleague, teacher/parent, teacher/Administration) and the need to plan those difficult conversations in order to achieve a win-win result.

Senior Education and Training Plan (SET P) – Doing it Well

During this one hour session Shauna Quinlivan discusses career development and the role of the SET P as a valuable tool in encouraging young people to take ownership of their career development journey during their senior years of schooling. Shauna provides teachers who are conducting SET P meetings/interviews with a greater insight into the process, specific SET P interview strategies plus understanding of the use of valuable tools that can be used during an interview. Some tools discussed during the presentation are the Australian Qualifications Framework, mapping of pathway options after school, working the prerequisite book and the ‘dos’ and ‘donts’ of a SET P meeting/interview.

Translating the Vision into Reality – Managing the Mob

Presented by Mr Graham Quinlivan

In this session Graham deal with working effectively within a team environment with a particular emphasis on how to encourage all members of the team to achieve their goals. It canvases suggestions for engaging with staff at all levels within a particular organisation in the context of the vision and goals that have been established.

Cooperative Learning – An Evidence-Based Smart Pedagogy Promoting Learning and Positive Wellbeing

Presenter by Dr Robyn Gillies

Dr Robyn Gillies' studies of small-group learning in school classrooms could bring new twists to an old technique. During this session she suggests a teacher does better as the "guide on the side" rather than the "sage on the stage". Her research at the University of Queensland suggests it has huge potential for teaching academic and interpersonal skills such as problem-solving, communication and conflict resolution and develops skills for lifelong learning success. Dr Gillies will show that teachers working in co-operative learning environments tend to use demonstrative, intimate, encouraging and helpful language and their students seem to see them as supportive, friendly, tolerant, competent and motivating.
